about Toucan

Summary of past activities - 2000

The government published the Connexions Strategy for a new youth support structure and Toucan began work on a joint project with Manchester Youth Service; 'Build' examined how practitioners who were already engaged in supporting young people could affect the development of the Connexions strategy.

We attended a conference on 'Teleworking and Disability' in Madrid, a transnational conference - 'Employment without Barriers', a 'Making Connexions with EQUAL' event, a Pandora regional workshop - part of a series held around the country examining barriers to employment for disabled people, and we hosted an 'EQUAL - the new community initiative' workshop.

To mark National Volunteers Week 2000, Toucan Millennium Volunteers held a presentation event for young people taking part in the project.

Toucan joined forces with the Bolton Evening News to offer 100 young people on the MV project the chance to develop their own newspaper - the first of four editions of 'newsHOG' was printed in September.

The Delphi (a community-based recycling scheme) project team moved from the Toucan office to an office in Longsight and took on their first trainee manager.

We became involved with Manchester Youth Services STEPS project for young people not attending school by offering ICT training.
