about Toucan

Summary of past activities - 2001

We opened an office in Brussels, within INRCT, a Belgian research institute for working conditions.

GMYnetwork undertook a special project to look at awareness of Connexions and started a series of workshops to help raise awareness about the service within the voluntary sector.

Toucan were successful in a joint proposal with partners in Latvia for funding for a project called, 'Stop the Dependency' aimed at providing basic project development and management training to NGOs representing pensioners and the elderly; the training took part in Riga.

Two Toucan project workers visited Accra, Ghana along with 2 young women from Manchester where we met with young women to share experiences and ambitions as part of On the Line Millennium Awards project.

We also visited Joensuu, Finland, through the Star-sign project; a group of 10 people whose first language is BSL were taken to give them an opportunity to learn Finnish Sign Language.

We facilitated the design of a website aimed at young people dealing with the death of someone close; www.rd4u.org.uk was developed by a group of young people, as part of Cruse Bereavement Care's Youth Involvement Project.

The Delphi project took on 6 trainee managers, placed bins for aluminium cans at various locations that were collected and emptied on a regular basis.

Toucan MV held their second and third celebration events for young people taking part in the project.

We ran the PET (Promoting Employment and Training) project for a second year, offering free IT training.

We had a stand at Employment Week 2001 exhibition in Brussels, we, along with Toucan MV and GMYnetwork, were sponsors of 'The Secret Lives of Manchester People' event held in Manchester Town Hall, we attended a seminar in Spain - part of the Femplea project, carrying out research in equal opportunities in employment and we delivered a presentation about the Social Entrepreneurship project being run in North Manchester at the 19th Annual Entrepreneurship Education Forum in Salt Lake City, USA.
