Testing Web Pages

  1. Test pages with as many browsers as you can.
  2. Use at least one text browser.
  3. Use a multiple graphics browser (Explorer or Netscape) and view with
    • Sounds and graphics loaded
    • Graphics not loaded
    • Sounds not loaded
    • Navigate without the use of a mouse
  4. Use the Bobby Accessibility Checker.

Quick Accessibility Checklist

(based on W3C quick tips card)

Images & animations
All images have the attribute to describe the function of all visuals.

Image maps
All maps are client-sided MAP and have supporting text for hotspots.

Multimedia
Video captioning and transcripts of audio have been provided.
Descriptions of video, and accessible versions are available in case inaccessible formats are used.

Hypertext links
Links makes sense when read out of context. For instance, do not use "click here"

Page organisation
Headings, lists, and consistent structure have been used. Use CSS for layout and style where possible.

Graphs & charts
Summaries and/or the attributes have been used for all graphs & charts.

Scripts, applets & plug-ins
Alternative content has been provided in the case of active features being inaccessible or unsupported.

Frames
Have been labelled with the title and/or name attribute

Tables
Line by line reading makes sense and summaries have been provided. Tables have not been used for column layout

Check your work
HTML validators, evaluation tools and text-only browsers have been used to verify accessibility.
