General principles and guidelines for including disabled people in regeneration projects

CHECKLIST 3 - Facility Preparation – Technology Specific Issues

These lists are not meant to be exhaustive; less or additional measures may be required depending on specific situations.

The Process

A. Initiate contact between disabled student service staff, computing centre staff, and interested users.

B. Develop a team on adaptive/accessible computing.

  1. Team should include persons (usually more than one in each area) with expertise in the following areas:
    1. Equipment currently being used
    2. Adaptive computer equipment and peripherals
    3. Access needs of all disabled people
    4. Current and projected demographics of disabilities users
    5. Computer centre/facility funding
    6. Computing centre policy
  2. Team members should ideally be drawn from the following groups of people:
    1. Computing Centre administrative staff
    2. Computer technician staff
    3. Disabled Student Services officers
    4. Potential users
    5. Outside consultants (Access auditors)
    6. Other groups as appropriate

C. Team survey of existing facilities to determine existing accessibility accommodations/barriers.

D. Survey to determine types and usage of "standard" software/hardware.

E. Survey disabled and non-disabled users to determine existing accessibility and/or barriers.

F. Placement of article(s) in information sources about intention to implementation of computer accessibility.

G. Identification of personnel to implement accessibility measures.

H. Staff members are familiar with the adaptive technology that is used in the facility

I. Staff members are aware of disability issues
