Project 'Contatto'

Working capacity Strengthening for Disabled People

There is a cluster of people with Retinitus Pigmentosa (RP) in the region, approximately 1,500 people (official figures are not available). The project is focused on providing specialist Information Technology training and will involve 480 hours of direct contact time. The beneficiaries are 20 people who will set up a co-operative with the aim to:

The overall aim is to take into account the needs of people with RP. The effects of RP occur at the peak of people's working life and the psychological affects of the change are often hidden. People with RP tend to become 'closed', which is made worse by the lack of awareness in Italy as a whole and the geographical isolation of Sardinia within Italy.

The CONTATTO project has been implemented whilst networking through the other Horizon projects in Italy and FIARP with the aim to provide training and jobs for people with RP.

The project will focus on the use of new technology and the involvement of that technology in non-profit organisations. The project will set up a databank for people with hyper vision:

The project will use expertise of the centre where the project is based, and will also use the Disability Centre in Geneva for Rehabilitation and network (GLADNET). Using the links with GLADNET and Sardinia aim to develop the other strands of the Horizon projects:

All the Horizon projects, including CONTATTO, have currently started networking with the training programmes in place after the summer.

The project will also be looking to use the Internet to provide links and information on non-profit organisations in Sardinia, and to look to exchanging people within these types of organisations.
