FUNDESCAN
Fundacion para el Desarrollo Social de Canarias / Foundation for the Social Development of the Canary Islands

FUNDESCAN is a non-profit organization launched by the Canaries UGT (General WorkersīUnion) in 1997 to promote the social economy in the islands. The Foundation came about as a result of the experience developed during the previous nine years by its predecessor FUNDESCOOP (Foundation for the Development of the Social Economy and the Co-operativism).

During these years FUNDESCAN has been consistently working on the promotion of all kind of social economyīs enterprises through education and training, research, advice, consultancy and symposiums and forums.

The task of supporting the social and economic development of the Canaries has also been one of FUNDESCANīs aims. It was the first organization to promote and build up the role of the Local Development Agent. Moreover, FUNDESCAN took an active role in the designing of several LEADERīs programmes in the Archipelago.

Within the international framework, the main interest has been the International Cooperation for Development. This activity has been concentrated until now on Cuba with projects in the areas of training, sustainable development and environment and community development.
