TAD Transnational PartnersFIARP and the ILO |
Retinitus Pigmentosa (RP) Sardinia forms part of the Federazione Italiana Associazioni Retinite Pigmentosa (FIARP), which is the national organisation representing people with Retinitus Pigmentosa within Italy.
The Regional Associations throughout Italy were established in the 1970's and 1980's to promote scientific research into RP, and now have our own network of hospitals and research. FIARP publishes the 'Lumiere' newsletter, along with journals from the regional associations.
FIARP also is involved in the 'social side' of RP including developing employment opportunities and attempting to influence legislation. People with RP gradually lose their sight and are then unable to carry on their previous employment and social activities.
Presently there is little legislation in Italy with regard to blindness/RP; people with RP find themselves not able to access the current quota systems for the blind and not regarded as visually impaired. The support structures that do exist are not accessible or available.
A number of members have attempted to develop different systems to improve the situation for people with RP, from these attempts the current project has developed. FIARP will use the project to look at opportunities that are available now as well as the development of new opportunities for the visually impaired.
FIARP is working with the International Training Centre (ITC) of the ILO, the International Labour Organisation, who are providing the management on the Horizon projects throughout Italy.
In total there are seven Horizon projects, working with the Regional Associations of FIARP with similar aims but working in different areas. The other projects are based in; Turin; Milan; Bologna; Rome; Venice and Sicily.
The ILO is an UN specialised agency, which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognised human and labour rights, founded in 1919.
The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights. Their vocational training centre, based in Turin, Italy, is running the project ‘CONTATTO’ ('Contact'), which is to create self-employment for those with a sight disability by setting up co-operatives with the participation of these disabled people in the sector of communications and publishing.
