Project 'On-Line Information on Employment and Training Opportunities for Disabled People'

ON-LINE Information Service Logo

The project will develop an integrated access to the sources of information on training and employment opportunities available through the Internet.

The network will offer support to individual or groups of disabled people to obtain information by creating access to a network of support persons and advice organisations.

Objectives

The project can be divided into three main strands of activity:

1. Training

2. The 'Information Application' through the Internet on:

3. Accessibility

Since the start of 1998 the project has made contacts with various organisations from information providers (ie, Citizens Advice Bureau), disability groups (i.e., Oldham Disability Alliance), disability networks (i.e., DisabilityNet), employment services (i.e., Placement and Advisory Counselling Team) and community networks (i.e., Manchester Community Information Network).

The training programme starts in July 1998 with the first group of information workers undergoing the NVQ Certificate in Telematics Level 1. Other groups will start in September and continue up to December 1998. These workers will start the NVQ Certificate in Telematics Level 2 in early 1999.

During the training programme these workers, with the help and support of the project, will be multiplying out the skills to groups of disabled people linked with their respective organisations.

The initial links for the 'Information Application' have been placed on the Internet but the first main development of the site, including home page etc, will be in place in July.

The format of this site, how people navigate through, type of information etc., will be influenced, used and analysed by the trainee's as well as the groups of disabled people linked to the project.

The issue of accessibility is being taken into account with the project following the existing guidelines and good practice that is currently available. The project is actively promoting the use of these guidelines throughout its network and links to other projects, information providers etc, and is co-hosting an 'access' event in Manchester in September 1998.
