last updated: 2 Feb 05 trainingdisability awarenessInline with the DRC, Toucan offers a bespoke disability awareness training and access audit package for all. The every increasing demand on firms and organisations to make staff aware of disability and how it can affect a person’s life, means this training has never been so imperative. Toucan recently delivered one of it disability awareness package to over 100 volunteers of the Partially Sighted World championship Manchester 2004, which saw 12 countries enter this football first from around the globe. Toucan use of today’s technology and modern training skills enable the volunteers to appreciate and benefit from Toucan training. The most recent statistics imply that there are 8.6 million people with disabilities in the UK, about one in seven of the population. People with disabilities have an annual spending power of 50 billion pounds. This will naturally be spent where people are treated fairly and offered a service suitable to their needs. Therefore, aside from legislative requirements, these facts alone offer a strong business case for treating people with disabilities equally and fairly. Whilst many people with disabilities work, according to the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), there are still one million people with disabilities in the UK who are unemployed and want to work. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA), in its own words, is: "An act to make it unlawful to discriminate against disabled people in relation with employment, the provision of goods services and facilities and services or the disposal or management of premises, to make provision about employment of disabled persons and to establish a National Disability Council. Providing disability awareness training for staff is currently perceived as a best practice management strategy. It should be noted that it is the providers of goods, services and facilities and not their employees, who are responsible for any acts of discrimination." The DRC says: "Business which wish to include people with disabilities totally, as employees/customers, are legally bound to appreciate the difficulties presented by their attitudes, practices, procedures, and physical features. Training for personnel at all levels of the organization plays a vital part in this process." |
