GMYN Millennium Volunteers

Millennium Volunteers is a national government scheme aimed at young people aged 16-24 to encourage them to volunteer their time to help others. The young people receive certificates for completing 100 and 200 hours of voluntary work. The work they carry out is their choice entirely, as long as it is of benefit to people other than themselves and the hope is that they will develop and retain an interest in volunteering throughout their lives. Whatever the young person undertakes as a volunteer, it will look great on their CV. Their experience will give them that extra something to talk about at an interview. Their voluntary work will equip them with valuable skills that any employer will want to see. Employers know that Millennium Volunteers are people with motivation, dedication and the ability to work hard.

Toucan have been running a Millennium Volunteers project, GMYN Millennium Volunteers, across the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester since 1999. Our central base is at Tanzaro House, Manchester and we also have Project Workers based in Manchester, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Manchester, Stockport, Trafford and Wigan. We work with a wide range of young people such as young people not in education, employment or training, college and university students.

As well as working in partnership with Connexions borough wide, we also work in partnership with organisations in the statutory and voluntary sector that work directly and indirectly with young people.

Since the project first started Toucan have helped hundreds of young people complete 200 hours and altogether over 2000 young people have experienced volunteering through GMYN Millennium Volunteers.
