Summary of past activities - 2003

We visited partners in San Sebastian, Spain as part of the UPF project, the project team on the UPF project organised a conference in Manchester, we attended the final conference for UPF in Malaga, twenty-one partners of the Eden project attended the TIE3 European Symposium in Biarritz, France and we attended a transnational conference in Huesca, Spain.

Toucan was visited by the Shadow Minister for Young People, Charles Hendry MP who met with a group of Toucan Millennium Volunteers and had a tour of our IT training facilities. We were also visited by three people from Poland who work with homeless young people and wanted to learn about similar projects in Manchester.

We were joined by a young man on a scholarship from the Department of Employment in Sweden to complete a five month work placement to gain experience and an insight into working with young people.

The Toucan Directors spent time in Brussels with Manchester Chamber of Commerce, visiting the European Commission, European Parliament and meeting with MEPs.

The Socrates project, Business Inside Out (BIO), was started with a planning meeting in Malmo, Sweden as was the EU funded CATCH (Creative Approaches to Combating Homelessness) project.

Millennium Volunteers held their fourth celebration event, this time moving venue to the prominent new building, URBIS, in Manchester City Centre.

Several of our ICT trainees on the Licence to Skill project completed their European Computer Driving Licence.
GMYnetwork project workers attended a two day workshop, with colleagues from Trafford Youth Service, offering resources and strategies for working with angry young men. Toucan attended a Youth Programme Action 5 workshop in Funchal, Madeira about European Voluntary Service (EVS). The Millennium Volunteers team were involved in a multi-lateral study visit to Finland to learn about organising youth exchanges and an EVS training event in Slovenia aimed at helping organisations develop their own EVS project.

Toucan Director, Dave Ellis contributed to a debate, at Manchester Chamber of Commerce, about entrepreneurship and its future in the UK, he also represented Toucan's Eden project at an EU LEAP Conference in Ireland and attended a EuroMed training course in Paris aimed at developing skills to implement EuroMed youth projects.

The Again-st Abandon project, looking at young people dropping out of education and the teleCem project, creating a social enterprise for socially disadvantaged people both started in December.
